Thomas Strock – The 16 Year Old Making A Dent In The App Store With MobileAppTycoon

I recently caught up with young entrepreneur (he’s only 16!), Thomas Strock of, a website where the young tycoon shares tips for entrepreneurs who would like to get themselves into the app store, but are not too sure how to go about it. He recently launched an iphone app, SharePrayer, which is very impressive and, if you’re particularly religious (and even if you’re not) you should definitely check out!

Here’s The Interview!

Hey Thomas, first of all want to thank you for doing this interview. I’m sure all the readers of MyAppTemplates  will enjoy some of the advice you have to share!

I was surprised when i saw you say you were only 16 years old on your profile page, i wasn’t expecting the maturity and insight in your posts to be coming from a 16 year old! How does being young affect you as an entrepreneur, online?

Yes, I’m 16. I’m lucky enough where I found my passion for marketing and entrepreneurship at an early age. The thing that I think sets me apart though is that I’ve never let the excuse of my young age get in the way of me pursuing my passion. The great thing about the internet and online-based businesses is that it essentially levels the playing field and gives everyone a chance to succeed no matter what your age is.

That is very true! What do you think gave you the courage to get started with your business?

For a while I’ve wanted to create mobile apps and I finally took the plunge and started developing my first app a few months ago. One of the main reasons I ended up finally taking action was because of Pat Flynn from For those of you who haven’t heard of him – he’s achieved a lot of success with his online businesses and while he could keep his strategies and tips to himself, he instead chooses to share them to help people and guide them through the process of making money online for themselves. Since he’s helped me a lot – I want to do the same thing for others as well who are looking to get started with making money from apps.

How many readers does the blog have now?

I don’t know for sure how many people read the blog, but I have a whopping 20 people subscribed to my mailing list 😉 But in my opinion, even if I only help one person achieve their goals with app development it’s a success in my book.

You have interviewed quite a few successful app developers. What are some of the most important things you’ve learned from those entrepreneurs that an up and coming app developer can use to help them succeed?

By far the biggest lesson to learn from these developers is that you have to be persistent when it comes to app development. These developers didn’t achieve overnight success. They took action, learned from their mistakes, kept creating apps, and eventually found success by doing so.

Is it still possible to succeed in the app store now, with over 500,000 apps competing?

I actually wrote a whole post on just this topic, which you can check out here but simply put, yes it is definitely possible to succeed in the app store if you have the right mindset and game plan.

Where do you, personally see this industry going in the next few years?

Mobile technology is growing exponentially and will continue to do so in the future – it’s not going away anytime soon. However, the days of throwing a crappy app on the app store and expecting to make lots of money are over. In order to succeed now in the app store you really need to have a great app idea, have great execution, and solve a problem! Like it or not, the world doesn’t need another iFart app 😉

Do you make apps yourself? Tell us a bit about them. Don’t be afraid to share numbers (If your comfortable doing so :))

I’m in the process of finishing up my first mobile app now. If everything goes well it should be released in the next few days. So right now I don’t have any concrete numbers for you – but when I do I’m going to make sure to post monthly income reports on my blog.

Long term, what are your goals for Mobile App Tycoon?

My number one goal is to inspire others to get involved in making money from mobile apps as well as help them succeed in doing so. I also am using it to hold myself accountable and use that as motivation for myself 🙂

And Finally, What are you trying to help entrepreneurs achieve with Mobile App Tycoon?

I really want to help people achieve the lifestyle they want for themselves through mobile app development – and that’s different for everyone. For me – I want to build up enough passive income from my apps that I can achieve financial freedom and not be tied down to a traditional 9-5 job after high school and college but instead run my own businesses.

Sidenote: If you’re an ios developer or entrepreneur wanting to get yourself into the app store, be sure to check out our custom iphone app templates here. These iphone app designs will not only save you money but they will also allow you to get your app ready and into the app store MUCH faster than you would hiring a designer.
